Millar’s Blended Irish Whiskey was created in 1843 as a premium Irish whiskey and was successfully marketed until the 1970's. Millar’s Special Reserve was renowned as a classic Dublin sipping whiskey. The traditional method of drinking such a whiskey was to sip it neat in or to accompany a pint of stout.
Adam Millar and Company was a firm of Dublin whiskey bonders, which sat across the road from Power's. Cooley distillery bought them out in 1988. Millar's has a 20% malt content, with both grain and malt having been aged in first-fill bourbon casks. This gives the brand extra weight, as do some sherrry notes which are immediately evident on the malty sherry nose. The palate is much fatter and oilier than ususal for Cooley and although the grain is clearly evident it is a well constructed blend with no nasty aftertaste often common with grain heavy whiskies. Loads of liquorice and vanilla dominate a very long finish. Like the Irish blend Hewitt's this whiskey avoids a middle-of-the-road balance making for a distinct and extremely enjoyable whiskey. Just try it and see for yourself.
