Amrut Distilleries (India)

Amrut Distillery’s story is as old as independent India itself, established by the Jagdale family in 1948 supplying Indian made spirits to the military and then expanding to the domestic market. In 1976 the company was inherited by the next generation and shas continued to blossom into an international force to be reckoned with. Their distillery is located in Kambipura on Mysore Road, around 20km outside Bangladore. The company also owns a re-distillation plant to produce surplus base spirt.  Minimal use of computers and automation is implemented at the distillery in order to provide further employment in the region. The ageing process in Indian whiskey is a little swifter than in Europe or U.S.A due to the increased temperature. Surinder Kumar, the master blender at Amrut Distilleries, has estimated that one year of barrel-ageing in India is equal to three years of ageing in Scotland. These whiskey have clocked up a plethora of awards in recent years, and regular mentions in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. If you haven’t tried these whiskies before, they come highly recommended.
