Bizkaia is a province in the Basque community located in the north of Spain. It has a beautiful coastal location overlooking the Bay of Biscay. An agricultural product still produced here is Txakolina (Pronounced chah-ko-lee-nyah). This is a kind of wine native to the region. It obtained a D.O. status in 1994 covering about 250 hectares of vineyards and 69 wineries. The main variety used to make this wine is Hondarrabi Zuri. There are two main traditional areas: Bakio and Balsameda. Most of vineyards here are small and dispersed on low foothills near the coast, at an average height of 150m above sea-level. Soil is mostly clay near the coast but more varied inland. The climate in Bakio is extremely Atlantic, while inland a warmer, drier and more continental climate can be expected.
