Suntory opened Yamazaki, Japan's first commercial distillery, in 1924. The country's industry is dominated by the two big producers of Suntory and Nikka. However there are currently ten distilleries working in the country. In the last five years Japanese whiskies have become incredibly popular with interantional demand outstripping supply.
