Longmorn
Longmorn is a great distillery that deserves a bit more exposure. It is situated near Elgin in Speyside and was originally founded in 1894 by John Duff who had founded the Glenlossie distillery, he later went on to start BenRiach distillery that at one time was named 'Longmorn 2'. The stills at Longmorn were directly coal fired right up until 1994 and it still has a workable steam engine along with a water wheel. The standard age expression is 16 years old although some great examples of older whiskies are available from independent bottlers. Longmorn has eight stills and is capable of producing 3,500,000 litres per year. It is currently owned by Pernod-Ricard/Chivas Group.
