Killowen The Cuige Limited Edition Poitin Plinth Set 5x250ml

5x 250ml

A very limited special set of handcrafted poitins from the Killowen Distillery. Each of these has been created using a mash containing a relatively high proportion of oats and they have been distilled in the distillery's small copper pot stills. After that they have been individually matured in ex-beer casks for the maximum permitted time (10 months).

From the distillery:

This unique peated mash bill offers a little more oat than Killowen's core mash-bill, as a tribute to the integral part oat has played in Irish distillation history. After a 24-hour flame-fed, double-distillation, and worm-tub condensation, the spirit is laid in casks at full strength for 10 weeks, as is the maximum allowable time by law. Each bottle is painstakingly, hand-filled, hand-labelled, wax-dipped, and hand-written. Each set has its own unique rustic pedestal made from a Killowen cask stave which has been, heat-straightened, carved for bottles, engraved with the Killowen Cuige Logo and wax finished. This release truly is 'Very Rare'. As usual, all your information is on the Killowen Label.

The names and Images for each bottle come from different locations carrying particular affection to Killowen Distillery, and places which Killowen think signify each cuige.

Ulster: 'Donard' - The highest mountain in The Mournes - God's country

Munster: 'Mish' - The Slieve Mish range to the east of Dingle peninsula

Connaught: 'Lutty' - A remarkably beautiful & remote part of Galway

Leinster: 'Duff' - Duff Hill - middle of the mighty Wicklow Mountains

Meath: 'Caillí' - Sliabh na Caillí - largest peak in Meath

Tasting Notes from the Producer
Flavour Nose: A welcoming, sweet turf-smoke arrival followed by a scent often found at hard-working Sawmills, a woodiness not from cask but somehow from the grains in the mash. Thick summer Hedgerows on one hand with sticky tree sap on the other. A hint of citrus, mostly lemon with a background of Earthiness along with notes of fresh treacle soda bread. Palate: A mouthful of juicy maple syrup on the backdrop of slow smouldering turf in copious amounts, from a hearth that needs clearing. This is followed by refreshing pine forest mist notes normally seen after a light spring sun shower. Finish: A complex recurrence of lemon juice, turf smoke, ginger ale and white pepper in no particular order. The Lemon sherbet & Smoke notes just go on and on and on. This poitín is a treasure.
