Calatayud

Calatayud is a DO located in the southwestern corner of Zaragoza (Aragon, Spain), achieving DO status in 1990. Vineyards are located on the south facing slopes of the Sierra de la Virgen. Atitudes of these vineyards ranges from between 550m-800m above sea level. It has a continenatal climate, with hot, long summers and cold winter months, with strong chance of frost. Mean annual rainfall is between 300mm and 500mm. Most of the vines are planted in soils that are stoney, loose, very poor nutrients and with a high lime cotent. The permatability is good so the roots are able to obtain the water and nutrients they require. Red varieties of wine production are dominant in this region. There are seven varieties of red grape authorised by the regulations of the DO but by far the most significant is Garnacha Tinta, representing 55% of total vines planted. The other red varieties are Mazuelo, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The authorised white varieties are Macabeo, Malvasia, Garnacha blanca and Chardonnay.
