Extremadura - Ribera Del Guardiana

Exremadura is located in the west of Spain, bordered by Portugal. It is one of Spain's official 'autonomous communities', however it is sparcely populated. Instead Extremadura is home to a plethora of wildlife creatures such as deer, otters and even lynxes. Its' wild black pigs go on to become the famous Iberian Ham. Although viticulture has existed in the region for several hundred years, it is not hugely famous for its wine. This is considered to be due to the lack of technology traditionally used in their wineries. In 1999 the Ribera del Guadiana DO title was established to represent the best that Extremadura has to offer. A stronger focus on exportation of the local wine has also lead to improvements in the technologies used, thus increasing the quality of the wine. Traditionally Tempranillo has been the grape that is most responsive to the region's terroir, although local white varieties such as Cayetana are also grown here. A few vineyards in the region are permitted to produce Cava, the sparkling white wine usually associated with north-eastern Spain. Aside from the wines made under the Ribera del Guadiana DO destination, all others produced in Extremadura are permitted to use only the term Vino de la Tierra Extremadura. Vino de la Tierra being a lesser category than DO.
