Priorat is located south-west of Catlaonia. It shares with Rioja one of only two DOCa classifications in all of Spain. This is the highest qualification level for a wine region according to Spanish wine regulations. Its main production is in powerful red wines, which came to internatioanl attention in the 1990's. Slate and quartz contribute to a unique soil called Llicorella. This soil has high mineral content and it is said to be a large contributor to the to the fine quality of the wine.
