Toro

Toro is a wine region in Castilla y Leon. It has an extremely temperate climate with temperatures dropping as low as -11ºC in winter and rising all the way to 36ºC in Summer. Such high temperatures, low rainfall and high levels of sunshine during Summer months means that grapes ripen rapidly, producing high alcohol levels in the wine. It is necessary for producers to keep a close eye on this as Spanishwine law prevents the production of wine greater tha 15% ABV. The Douro river provides much needed hydration for the vines, therefore vineyards are located close to its banks. Tempranillo is by far the most popular grape variety grown in this region, locally known as Tinta de Toro, resulting in powerful red wines. Small amounts of Garnacha is also grown, mainly used for Toro Rosad (Rose) and Malvasia Blanca and Verdejo used for the white Toro Blanco.
