Tempranillo
This is Spain's signature red grape variety and it can be found in the many great wines such as those from Rioja and Ribera Del Duero. Tempranillo likes cool climates but paradoxically also needs heat to ripen fully. It therefore grows best in high altitudes where daytime temperatures are high but in the evening it can get a blast of cold air. It has many synonyms and is known as Tinta Roriz or Aragonez in Portugal, with alternatives in its native Spain.
