Viognier is an unsual grape variety that is thought to originate in Croatia and is closely related to the Italian varieties of Freisa and Nebbiolo. It produces full bodied and aromatic wines but is relatively difficult to grow and also tricky to successfully make wine from. It is best known in France's Rhone valley, the Languedoc and parts of California and Australia.
