South Africa

The Dutch East India company were responsible for the first plantings of vines in South Africa and the first recorded harvest was in 1659. Production was initially to help prevent scurvy amongst sailors making voyages along the spice route. A wide variety of wines are made and the country's signature red is made from Pinotage which is a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault.
