Both are heavily peated Islay single malts from the same southern coastal cluster, but the character differences are meaningful. Laphroaig leads with more aggressive medicinal iodine, antiseptic, and raw seaweed notes, particularly in the Quarter Cask and 10 Year expressions. Lagavulin 16 is rounder, more integrated, and drier in its peat expression, with more dried fruit, dark chocolate, and espresso complexity from the longer maturation. Laphroaig is more challenging; Lagavulin is more considered.
