Thomond Gate Pot Still Batch 1 Cask A001

A Pot Still whiskey that is limited to just 100 bottles from a single Oloroso sherry cask and bottled to cask strength, 61% abv. This is Batch B01 and is part of a series which will follow the life of a single cask by withdrawing three limited bottle release and allowing the bulk of this whiskey to continue to mature. Future releases, Batch B02 & Batch B03, will be withdrawn and bottles at different stages to highlight the influence of time and the environment on the maturing spirits taste and profile. On the neck of each bottle, is a uniquely numbered coin which is a replica of the traditional 'Tub tokens' that we originally used to purchase spent grains from the original Thomond Gate Distillery.

The packaging also includes a certificate — in the original writing style of the distillery — & each owner will get to enter their name into the 'Thomond Gate Book of Custodians'.

Each bottle has been hand bottled, wax sealed on All Saints Day and individually numbered and signed.

Is single malt a single pot still whiskey?

No. These are two distinct and separate Irish whiskey styles. Single malt is made exclusively from malted barley. Single pot still uses a mash of both malted and unmalted barley, which is specifically and exclusively an Irish style. Both are distilled in copper pot stills, but the grain bill difference produces fundamentally different flavour profiles: single malt tends toward fruit and floral notes while single pot still delivers a characteristic spicy, creamy, grain complexity unique to the style.

What does single pot still mean?

Single pot still is an Irish whiskey style defined by the use of a mash bill containing both malted and unmalted barley, distilled in copper pot stills at a single distillery. The unmalted barley is the critical differentiator: it produces a characteristic spicy, oily, creamy texture and a green grain, orchard fruit, and nutmeg flavour complexity that no other whiskey style replicates. It is produced almost exclusively at Midleton Distillery. Redbreast, Green Spot, and Powers are the defining expressions.

The term was officially codified in Irish Whiskey Technical File regulations in 2014 to replace the older informal terms pure pot still and Irish pot still, which had been used inconsistently. The pot still descriptor distinguishes the style from single malt, which is also pot still distilled but uses a different grain bill.
