FAQs
Standard commercial vodka at 40% ABV will not freeze in a domestic freezer, which typically operates at around minus 18 degrees Celsius. Pure ethanol freezes at minus 114 degrees Celsius. However, lower ABV flavoured vodkas and liqueurs may partially freeze. Premium vodkas stored in the freezer lose volatile aromatics at very low temperatures, which is why serving at around 0 to minus 5 degrees Celsius in a chilled glass is preferable to storing in the freezer long term.
No, an unopened bottle of vodka stored correctly has an indefinite shelf life. Once opened, oxidation begins, but the high ABV of 40% and above acts as a preservative that prevents microbial spoilage. Flavoured vodkas with added sugars or fruit components will degrade more quickly after opening. For optimal character retention on premium expressions, consume within two to three years of opening and store away from direct heat and sunlight.
A standard 35ml measure of vodka at 40% ABV contains approximately 72 to 78 calories, derived entirely from ethanol at 7 calories per gram. There are no carbohydrates, fats, or sugars in a pure unflavoured vodka. Flavoured and infused vodkas will carry additional calories from added sugars. The calorie count increases proportionally with ABV: a 50% ABV expression will carry roughly 20% more calories per measure than a standard 40% bottling.
Vodka can legally be produced from any agricultural raw material. The most common bases are grain, specifically wheat, rye, or corn, and potato. Wheat based vodkas such as Belvedere and Grey Goose tend toward a clean cereal softness. Rye based expressions like Belvedere Single Estate deliver subtle spice and viscous mouthfeel. Potato vodkas produce a creamier, earthier texture. The distillation and filtration process determines the final character as much as the raw material.
The cleanest pairing is cold tonic water, which allows the base spirit character to register without masking it. Freshly squeezed citrus, particularly grapefruit, amplifies the ester brightness of premium wheat vodkas. Tomato juice in a Bloody Mary works well with earthy potato expressions. The key principle: the higher the quality of the vodka, the less you should mask it. Mixing premium single estate vodka with a sugary cordial is a waste of both the bottle and the money spent on it.
