National Scotch Day with Celtic Whiskey

Posted by James Holohan Friday 23rd July 2021 0 Comment(s) Sláinte,

Both Ireland and Scotland have a rich history of whisk(e)y, with many whiskey aficionados loving to argue over which style is better. Of course, us here at Celtic Whiskey love all whiskies!

Scotch Whisky is made from malted barley and generally has a fuller, heavier taste than many other whiskies. Irish whiskey, by contrast, such as Pot Still uses a combination of malted and unmalted barley and is renowned for its smooth flavour and hints of vanilla. Of course, like Irish whiskey, Scotch can also be single malt or blended, too!

While scotch is only distilled and aged in Scotland, there are many different varieties! Scotch whisky has its own geographic intricacies that influence the flavour. For example, the whisky that's produced in Scotland's Lowland region is considered to be more mellow and delicate. But the whisky produced in the Islay region is known for heavier, smokier varieties. This can vary, especially as Scotland has over 100 different distilleries across five different regions!

And so, to celebrate National Scotch Day on 27th July, we’ve put together a blog post with some picks to celebrate the day. Enjoy!

  1. GlenAllachie 15 Year Old

Gold medal winner at the Scotch Whiskey Masters 2021! This 15-year-old  expression of GlenAllachie single malt has been matured in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and oloroso sherry casks, resulting in an elegantly smooth, rich dram bursting with aromas of raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices.

ABV: 46% | €70.95

  1. Kilchoman PX Sherry Cask Matured Malt

The first global release of Kilchoman that has matured in Pedro Ximenez casks. This is vatted together from 33 casks, 9 of which were full PX maturation and the remainder were PX finishes for a extra maturation period of 12-18 months. Holds plenty of notes of warming, with dark berries, caramelised brown sugar, tobacco leaf, liquorice and fruit cake with mixed spices and smouldering peat smoke. Big and bold with a delightful poise and balance of flavour. Bottled at 47.3%

ABV: 47.3% | €85.00

  1. Arran Sherry Cask Strength

Distilled and matured in Lochranza, this Arran Single Malt has been matured exclusively in sherry hogsheads from Jerez, Spain. It is described as being complex and luxurious with notes of dark chocolate and ginger with hints of spice, ripe figs, and sweet cherries. Bottled at natural cask strength of 55.8%.

ABV: 55.8% | €64.00

  1. Bruichladdich 10 Year Old CWS Exclusive

A Single Cask exclusive from the Bruichladdich Distillery, Islay, Scotland, bottled just for the Celtic Whiskey Shop. This 10 year old single malt was aged exclusively in ex-Syrah wine casks and bottled at cask strength of 61.4%. Limited to just 288 bottles.

ABV: 61.4% | €150.00

  1. Octomore 10.3

The 10.3 edition of the Octomore series from Bruichladdich. The barley used for this distillation was harvested from a single field on an Islay farm. This 6 year old single malt Scotch whisky was aged fully in American oak casks and bottled at 61.3% ABV. The Octomore 10 series explores 'softer smoke', is peated to just 114PPM. In terms of flavour, expect salt on the lips and more honey and lemon on the palate, then the peat sweeps in with the oak and heat from the high strength. Deeper flavours from the spirit, pear and gooseberry are more defined and richer.

ABV: 61.3% | €216.50

  1. GlenAllachie 12 Year Old Sauternes Wine Cask Finish

This straw-coloured limited edition single malt was initially aged in American oak Bourbon barrels before an additional two years of maturation in Sauternes sweet wine barriques. These medium toasted French oak casks have imparted delicious flavours of stone fruits, citrus, and some sweet grape notes along with cinnamon and almond. Bottled at 48% non chillfiltered and without colouring.
