Bairrada is a Portuguese wine region located in the Beira province. The region has Portugal's highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). Bairrada has a mild maritim climate with abundant rainfall, thanks to its situation between the mountainous Dao region and Atlantic beaches. Despite much of the region being hilly, the majority of vineyards lie on flatter land, with vineyards often divided into several sub-plots. It is dominated by two main types of soil: limestone and sandy, each influencing its style of wine. This area is crucial for the production of Portugal's sparkling wines as base wines for sparkling require the kind of acidity that the cool Bairrada climate delivers.Baga is the traditional local red grape, making tannic wines that can that have high acidity if uner-ripe. However when handled right Baga can give rich, dense, fruity reds that age into elegant wines of great complexity. Since 2003 a mulitude of other grapes have been permitted in DOC bairrada wines-national grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro as well as the international likes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot.
