Terra Alta

'Terra Alta' translates from Catalonian to mean 'High Land'.It is no surprise therefore that the mountain peaks in this area can reach 3,000ft. He vineyards are located slightly lowers than this, and the foothills and valley floors. Pablo Picasso spent several summers here and captured the beauty of the region in some of his works. Terra Alta was awarded DO status in 1985, evolving greatly since its promotion. The region is best known for its smaller producers, although co-operatives have traditionally played an improtant role. Many co-operatives are the proud owners of modernist wineries, designed by the Cataln Architect Cesar Martinell, a student of Antoni Gaudi! The climate can be described as a combination od Mediterranean and continental. Long hot Summers and very cold winters. The El Cierzo provides a local dry wind however which helps to moderate temperatures through out the growing seaso, and also assists in the prevntion of fugal disease on the vines. Soils are clay and coastal limestone with good drainage. A wide selection of grapes can be found in this region such as Garnacha Blanca, Parellada, Macabeo, Moscatel, Chardonnayand Chenin Blanc for whites, whilst Garnacha, Carinena, Syrah Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Franc for red wine production.
