World's Best Whiskey at the World's Best Single Outlet Retailer

After the recent success of the Teeling 24 Year Old at the 2019 World WhiskiesAwards, Celtic Whiskey Shop (winner of the World's Best Single Outlet Retailer at the same event) were thrilled to host Teeling’s Master Distiller, Alex Chasko along with a select few last night, Wednesday 29th May, where those present got the chance to sample the award winning whiskey along with others from Teeling’s award-winning collection.

The Teeling 24 Year Old became the first Irish whiskey to win the highly coveted Best Single Malt at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards back in March of this year, marking a high point for whiskey distilling in Ireland. After decades of turmoil in the industry all throughout the 20th Century, Teeling became the first new distillery established in Dublin for over 125 years. The distillery was set up in 2015 by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling, along with their father John, all playing crucial roles in reviving the art of distilling in Ireland’s capital.

This was clearly just the start of many ‘firsts’ for Teeling. Last year they released their Teeling Single Pot Still, a significant landmark for whiskey distilling in Dublin as it marked the first new Dublin distilled Irish whiskey to be released for nearly 50 years. Created using a distinctively Irish recipe of malted and unmalted barley, batch one was triple distilled in 2015 and matured in a combination of virgin oak, ex-wine and ex-bourbon barrels.

In contrast, the highly acclaimed Teeling 24 Year Old was distilled in 1991 and has been initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels, then left to mature further in ex-Sauternes wine casks. It boasts a complexity of various aromas resulting from the dual-maturation process, some of which include notes of lime, lemon, apricots along with some gentle spiced flavours. Bottled at 46% with no chill filtration, it finishes smooth and mellow, a drink to be cherished. With just 5,000 bottles per batch, it is a highly sought gem for any whiskey drinker.

Also included on the tasting list was the Teeling Single Grain, Teeling Stout Cask and Teeling Brabazon Series 2. The multi-award winning Teeling Single Grain most recently claimed World’s Best Irish Single Grain at the World Whiskies Awards. Matured in Californian Ex-Cabernet Sauvignon Barrels, it is sweet and fruity on the palate with notes of honey, butter and vanilla. Soft and beautifully smooth to drink.

Whiskey enthusiasts were then introduced to the Teeling Galway Bay Stout Cask, which took World's Best Irish Blended Limited Release at the same event for the second year running. Made in collaboration with the Galway Bay Brewery, their Imperial Stout The 200 Fathoms was aged in Teeling Small Batch barrels before being returned to Teeling distillery. This innovative combination is limited to 12,000 bottles and drives complex flavours of dark chocolate and sour fruits with a slight hint of bitterness ebbing from the stout casking.

Before rounding off the evening with the concluding Teeling 24 Year Old, guests sampled the Teeling Brabazon Series 2, winner of the World's Best Irish Single Malt. Bottled at 49.5%, Series 2 consists of a vatting of 6 different port casks of varying vintages and styles; White, Tawny and Ruby Port. The result is a combination of well-balanced fruity aromas with a dry finish and a hint of sea salt.

These were all enjoyed in store to a full house and presented by Master Distiller Alex Chasko who provided a guided tasting and background of each drink.
