Taking its name from the Scots Gaelic for 'Sound of Islay', Caol Ila sits in the north of the island, close to Port Askaig and looking over towards Jura. It was founded in 1846 and was completely rebuilt in 1972. Caol Ila is one of Diageo's many malt distilleries and it is an important component in Johnnie Walker and The Black Bottle blends. It is light in body with medium smokiness and usually a very pleasant fruity character. The distillery has six large pot stills and has a large capacity of 350,000,000L per year.
