Chateau Musar 2018
Château Musar 2018 is a distinctive expression of the Bekaa Valley, produced from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan. While historically influenced by Bordeaux varieties, the wine reflects a style firmly rooted in its Lebanese origin.
The estate, founded by Gaston Hochar, is widely regarded as Lebanon’s most iconic winery. Its vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, where altitude, limestone-rich soils and dry conditions contribute to a long, balanced ripening season. Winemaking and ageing take place in Ghazir, near the coast, where a more moderate climate allows for gradual and consistent maturation.
The house style was shaped by Serge Hochar, who studied in Bordeaux under Émile Peynaud, one of the most influential oenologists in the world. The estate remains family-run, maintaining a strong emphasis on traditional methods and long ageing.
Fermentation takes place in cement vats, followed by a period of ageing in French oak and extended maturation in bottle prior to release.
In the glass, it shows a medium ruby colour with slight development at the rim. The nose is complex and evolving, often revealing notes of dried fig, prune, black olive and tobacco, alongside hints of leather, spice and earthy undertones. With air, further nuances such as tea, cocoa and balsamic tones may emerge.
On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, structured and supported by fresh acidity. Flavours of dark cherry, complemented by typical mediterranean herbs such as thyme and subtle mineral notes. The tannins are fine and integrated, contributing to a balanced texture, with a persistent finish.
Château Musar is known for its ability to evolve over time, and the 2018 vintage can be enjoyed now with decanting or cellared further for additional development.
