Irish Whiskey Cocktails to Enjoy This St Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick's Day is one of the biggest celebrations of the year, and while it may have been cancelled again this year due to Covid, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate from the comfort of our own homes! The celebration is a tradition for many of us, whether we have a drop of Irish blood or not. And if you're joining in the fun, you will definitely need a few great drinks for the occasion.

These Irish whiskey-based cocktails are a tastier alternative for the Irish (and Irish-at-heart) to mix up at home this St Patrick’s day (or to get some practice in for World Cocktail Day on March 24th!)

So be sure to embrace your Irish-ness and scroll on, as there's a fun and tasty recipe to fit everyone’s tastes. Fans of our Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in Killarney might recognise a few of these cocktails! Mix one of these up and start spreading the Irish cheer—Éirinn go Brách!

  1. 93 New Street (Old Fashioned)

A favourite for fans of Jameson’s: the 93 New Street, with Jameson Black Barrel at the core! This fantastic whiskey cocktail is young at heart and a delightful spin on one of the very first whiskey cocktails ever invented. Named after the address of our own Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder and one of their signature cocktails. Rich, smooth, and silky—perfect for sipping on!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • In a Boston shaker, crush the coffee bean,
  • Add all ingredients,
  • Reverse dry shake (shake over ice, discard ice, dry shake),
  • Double strain into prechilled glass,
  • Add ice,
  • Garnish with 3 coffee beans and mint spring.

  1. Irish Coffee

Few drinks in the world can beat the original Irish coffee! It is the signature drink for Irish whiskey and a little more complicated than simply pouring whiskey into your coffee, though it's not difficult. To make this timeless drink, you will need brown sugar and lightly whipped cream. Combine those with your favourite Irish whiskey and the most robust coffee you can brew, and a fantastic cup is ready to enjoy this St. Patrick’s Day.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • To start, heat your glass by adding some boiling water and gently swirling it. Add a metal spoon to your glass when adding the water to prevent the glass from cracking,
  • Dispose of boiling water,
  • Add a measure of your favourite Irish whiskey to the glass,
  • Add a serving of your favourite coffee. Make sure to leave room for the whipped cream on top,
  • Add a spoon of sugar and stir well,
  • Finally, add the cream. Whisk the cream in a bowl until it begins to stiffen slightly. Refrain from over whisking or the cream will be difficult to pour!
  • Turn your spoon upside and place the tip into the glass, just above the coffee. Slowly pour the whipped cream over the spoon and into the coffee. Not too fast or the cream won’t float,
  • Add an optional sprinkle of chocolate powder on top and you’re good to go. Enjoy!

  1. The Irish Mule

The Irish Mule is a fantastic way to enjoy the lighter side of Irish whiskey. Made with ginger beer, lime juice, and whiskey, this is one of the most common Irish whiskey cocktails you’ll come across and a perfect fit for your St. Patrick’s Day. The whiskey works perfectly here with the sharp ginger notes to add a bite to the flavour and crispness of the drink.

Ingredients

  • 60ml Teelings Blackpitts
  • 180ml ginger beer
  • Juice of half a lime (about 30ml)
  • Lime slices and mint sprig for garnish
  • Ice

Directions:

  • Fill a large glass with ice,
  • Pour in whiskey and lime juice,
  • Top with ginger beer,
  • Stir to mix,
  • Garnish with lime slices and mint sprig.

  1. Bog Warrior

If you’re looking for something different, why not try your arm at crafting the perfect Bog Warrior, a favourite of our partners at the Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder! A delicious combination of Connemara, Tawny Port, and a dash of bitters to bitters to really bring out the taste.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Pre-chill glass,
  • Add all ingredients to your cocktail shaker along with ice and shake hard for approximately 15 seconds,
  • Strain into your pre-chilled glass and garnish with a split orange wheel!

  1. Dubliner Cocktail

Celebrate all things Irish with this delightful take on the Manhattan cocktail! A sweet, complex, herby cocktail which was created by Gary and Mardee Regan in 1999 to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It would be rude not to create this great cocktail and continue the tradition!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • In a mixing glass, stir all ingredients with ice for 40 seconds,
  • Strain into pre-chilled glass,
  • Garnish with lemon twist & enjoy!

  1. Furze Flower

While some of the ingredients may sound alien, this is a super easy cocktail, truly divine, and ridiculously easy to whip up (once you have the ingredients)! A perfect whiskey-based cocktail for those looking for something a little different or lighter this St. Patrick’s Day.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Pre-chill glass,
  • Add all ingredients to your cocktail shaker along with ice and shake hard for approx. 15 seconds,
  • Strain into your pre-chilled glass and garnish with a lemon twist!

  1. Zesty Irishman

Proof that both Irish and Scotch whisky can work in a sour drink! The recipe pairs the two dark spirits with triple sec and fresh lemon then tops it off with a splash of ginger ale. A zesty cocktail that is ideal for when you're in the mood for something that's simultaneously slow, smooth, and invigorating.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Gather the ingredients,
  • In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the whiskey, Drambuie, triple sec, and lemon juice,
  • Shake until the tin is frosted,
  • Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with fresh ice,
  • Add a splash of ginger ale and garnish with a lemon twist. Serve and enjoy.
