Scotch Day at Celtic Whiskey Shop

It’s probably no surprise that us here at Celtic Whiskey Shop love whisk(e)y from all around the world. Irish whiskey, World Whiskeys, Scotch, they’ve all got a home under our roof. And so, when we heard our friends across the pond are celebrating their National Scotch Day, we thought we’d join in on the fun and take this opportunity to turn the spotlight onto, you guessed it, Scotch whisky!

For those unfamiliar or new to Scotch Whisky, here’s the quick background: Scotch is made from malted barley and generally has a fuller, heavier taste than many other whiskies. But, while most people associate Scotch with heavier, smokier flavours this is not necessarily the case as Scotland has over 100 different distilleries scattered across five different region who all produce distinct styles!

If you’re looking for more mellow, delicate, and somewhat fruity flavours, try a whisky that's produced in Scotland's Lowland region such as Auchentoshan 12 Year-Old or Arran Port Cask Finish. But if you’re looking for that famous scotch smoke, try a whisky produced in the Islay region such as Ardbeg 10 Year Old or Laphroaig 10 Year Old.

So, with that quick bit of background out of the way, let’s take a look at some exciting scotch releases and recommendations we have for you to try this National Scotch Day! Enjoy!

  1. Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2010

First up on our list, we have a relatively new release we got in from Islay’s Bruichladdich. This single malt whisky was distilled from barley grown by eight family farms on their remote Scottish island home. The spirit was distilled early in 2010 before being filled into ex-Bourbon and French wine casks. The result is a whisky emerging with crisp sweet apple, ripe gooseberry, malted barley, butterscotch, spice, and creamy vanilla custard flavours.

ABV: 50% | €95.00

  1. Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2022

It wouldn’t be a list unless we included this stunning dram from Kilchoman: their Loch Gorm 2022 release! For this edition, it was matured in Oloroso sherry butts for a minimum of eight years. The 22 casks selected are a combination of 20 fresh and 2 refill casks. These ex-oloroso sherry casks impart a combination of heavy sherry notes, spicy dark chocolate, rich fruits, and burnt sugar, providing the perfect balance with that famous Kilchoman peat smoke and a little citrus fruit on the finish.

ABV: 46% | €85.00

  1. Glenlivet 12 Year Old Licensed Dram

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Licensed Dram is a stunning first fill double oak matured single malt whisky made in honour of George Smith. George was the first person to obtain a whisky making license in the Glenlivet Valley all the way back in 1824. This rather exciting single malt scotch offers enticing flavours of golden honey and vanilla custard layered perfectly with hazelnut and liquorice. Delectable, if we do say so ourselves!

ABV: 48% | €84.00

  1. Tamdhu Distinction Single Malt

Next up in our scotch appreciation list, we have a limited edition bottling from Tamdhu made to celebrate the unmistakable characteristics of first-fill American oak sherry cask maturation. This whisky begins its journey in the oak forests of North America, before being imported into Spain where these casks are carefully crafted in the ‘sherry triangle’ over the course of six years. Delivers rich fruity flavours from the sherry and a wonderful natural amber colour.

ABV: 48% | €92.00

  1. Glenallachie 10 Year Old French Virgin Oak

A delightfully delicious dram from Glenallachie's Virgin Oak Series. This release sees that wonderfully golden single malt first matured in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels before undergoing additional maturation in hogsheads made of French oak (Quercus Robur), sourced from the Haute-Garonne region, for approximately 18 months. Expect all that Speyside goodness with added silky tannins, sweet spices, and fruit notes.

ABV: 48% | €74.00

  1. Robert Burns Single Malt

From the Isle of Arran distillery comes a delightful single malt dedicated to the famed Scottish poet, Robert Burns. This beautifully packaged and easy-drinking bottling is officially endorsed by the World Burns Federation, making it perfect for Burns Night as well as any other time of year! Malty and sweet on the palate with an enticing spicy finish.

ABV: 43% | €43.00

7.Torabhaig Legacy Allt Gleann Single Malt

Torabhaig, the second legal distillery built on the Isle of Skye, has released its second single-malt Scotch with the name Allt Gleann. This is one release we’re certainly excited about! This release marks part two of the Legacy Series. Drawn from small batches of only 30 casks and is made with a mix of Concerto and Laureate malted barley. On the palate, this one is a progression of the distillery's famously smoky palate: robust peat smoke followed by grilled yellow fruits and fresh coastal notes.

ABV: 46% | €73.00

  1. Glenmorangie Signet

One of the world's greatest whiskies without an age statement and Master winner at the Luxury Masters 2021 hosted by The Spirits Business. Signet is made from a unique mix of standard malted barley along with a proportion of chocolate malt. A variety of casks are used for ageing including some virgin oak barrels. While it carries no-age-statement, there is said to be an element of some of the distillery's oldest and rarest stocks, ranging from 35 to 40 years old, in this Highland single malt. As you can imagine, this one is a real treat on the palate, providing a contrast of rich sweetness with an explosive crackle of sizzling spices and bitter mocha.

ABV: 46% | €260.00
