Jancis Robinson | 2012 Vintage: '40% Carignan, 40% Syrah, 20% Grenache. Steep hills, 400m above sea level. Carignan undergoes carbonic maceration. Slightly muddy crimson. Sweet generous plump nose. Lots of fruit to begin with, a real mouthful of berries with bright lemony acidity. However the fruit is not as ripe or as sweet as the nose would suggest. More sharp-edged, with a touch of cedary spice. Young vigorous tannins kicking the fruit back into submission, and I think they need a year or two to mellow out a little. Juniper berry on the finish, giving the wine an attractive medicinal edge, very restrained and elegant, in typical Calmel & Joseph mode. These guys take Saville Row into the vineyard. (TC) 13.5%, Drink 2016-2024 - 17/20' 2011 Vintage 16.5/20. 'Smells of freshly mown grass and cranberry jam. Intense, concentrated and packing plenty of power. Bovril, meaty , chunky broad. Some dried fruit in there and dark minerality.' |
International Wine Challenge | Gold Medal & Trophy Winner 'Beguiling smoking cherry nose. Soft ribena fruit complexity with succulent tannins and length. Lovely concentration and prune notes.' |
