Vermouth and Aperitifs

Vermouth takes it's name from the German for wormwood: Wermut. Wormwood has always been an integral ingredient and was traditionally thought to ail stomach aches or treat intestinal parasites! Today it is one of the many aromatic herbs and spices that give vermouth its unique flavour. Vermouth's origins are in Northern Italy and the South of France. It is made from light red or white wine that has been fortified and had herbs, barks, fruit and spices added for flavouring. The medicinal use of Vermouth started to die out at the end on the 18th century but the invention of some classic cocktails towards the end of the 19th century saw its popularity rise again. It is an essential ingredient in the Manhattan, Martini, Negroni and Americano cocktails and is a 'must stock' item for any bar.
