Montsant

The Monsant D.O consists of 57 wineries and 44 private labels. It is located in the province of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) and covers twelve municipalities. It was created as a separate DO in the early 2000s. A massive 94% of production here is in red wines, with almost two-thirds of this being for export outside of Spain. Vineyards vary from 200-700m above sea level. The dominant soil types are chalky clay, granitic sand and slate. There is a mediterranean climate, with continental influences. Rainfall usually occurs in autumn, with little chance of hailstones or frost.
