Talisker

Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye and has a character all of its own. It has some smokiness (much like the Islay malts) but also a peppery/spicy quality. It was founded in 1831 and was rebuilt in 1960 after a fire destroyed the still house and most of the other buildings. It is claimed that Talisker owes much of its rich, full flavour to the traditional worm condensers which give the spirit more contact with copper. Peated malt at a phenolic level of 18-22 ppm is sourced from Glen Ord maltings and their is additional peat in the source water. Talisker has five stills and produces around 2,600,000 litres of alcohol per year.

FAQs
Talisker's maritime brine, black pepper, and coastal peat smoke character performs best in cocktails that complement rather than compete with its intensity. A Talisker Storm and Ginger Ale is the most accessible application, where the ginger amplifies the spice. A Talisker Penicillin variant, replacing blended Scotch with Talisker as both base and smoky float, is the most rewarding cocktail application for those who appreciate the full character of the distillery style in a cocktail context.
Talisker 10 Year Old at 45.8% ABV is at a high enough proof that a few drops of cold water will significantly open the black pepper, sea salt, malt, and coastal peat aromatics. Neat in a tulip glass is the most revealing format for first assessments. Adding a small volume of water and waiting 60 seconds before nosing again reveals a noticeably more complex and floral dimension that the higher proof initially suppresses. This is a whisky that rewards patience and incremental water addition.
Yes, consistently. Talisker 10 Year Old is one of the most distinctively characterful single malts in the Classic Malts range, offering briny sea salt, black pepper, sweet malt, and coastal peat smoke from the only distillery operating on the Isle of Skye. It represents excellent value for the price and quality level. The 18 Year Old and the Distillers Edition, finished in Amoroso sherry casks, are both significant upgrades on the 10 in complexity and are worth seeking out.
Talisker is a single malt Scotch whisky produced at Talisker Distillery in Carbost on the Isle of Skye, the only distillery on the island, founded in 1830. Owned by Diageo and part of the Classic Malts range, it produces a heavily maritime, briny, peated, and pepper forward single malt character shaped by its dramatic coastal Highland location and the influence of Atlantic weather on the maturation warehouses that face the sea. Robert Louis Stevenson called it the King o' drinks.
For first time buyers, the Talisker 10 Year Old is the essential entry point and benchmark. For those who already know the house style, the Talisker 18 Year Old delivers a more integrated, complex expression of the same maritime and pepper character with additional dried fruit and oak depth from extended maturation. The Distillers Edition, finished in Amoroso sherry casks, adds a dark fruit and cocoa dimension that rounds the intensity for those who find the standard 10 Year Old's pepper character assertive.
