The calorie count is higher than a standard whiskey pour due to the cream and sugar content in addition to the alcohol. Reduced fat or light versions of Irish cream liqueurs are available and typically contain around 30% fewer calories per measure.

Irish cream liqueur is made by blending Irish whiskey with fresh dairy cream, chocolate or cocoa flavouring, vanilla, and sugar in specific proportions that create a stable, shelf stable emulsion. The whiskey's alcohol acts as a partial preservative. Commercial production uses homogenisation to prevent separation and extend shelf life. Home versions can be made by blending 240ml Irish whiskey with 400ml condensed milk, 400ml double cream, 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, and vanilla extract, though shelf life will be significantly shorter.
