Grip the body firmly in your non-dominant hand. Place your palm over the cap and apply direct downward pressure while twisting the body in the opposite direction. If it has vacuum locked due to temperature change from ice, run warm water briefly over the joint. Never strike the side of the shaker. That loosens the seal and dents the body.
Add ice first, then spirits, then modifiers and mixers. Fill no more than two thirds to allow proper agitation. Cap securely, hold with both hands, and shake with sharp, controlled horizontal strokes for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain immediately. Over-shaking dilutes; under-shaking under-chills. For stirred drinks like a Manhattan, a mixing glass and bar spoon will always serve you better.
