Italy

Italy vies with France for the 'Worlds Largest Wine Producer' award. In reality they are both up there and volumes change year to year depending market forces and weather conditions. Italy has a great tradition of grape growing and wine making can be traced back to Etruscan and Greek settlers. Being at the crossroads of the Mediterranean meant that it became home to a bewildering and large selection of grape varieties. Each region in Italy carries its own traditions, cuisine and accompanying wine meaning that there is an incredible variety of qualities and styles. Newer areas in developing parts of Tuscanny, have given rise to 'Super-Tuscan' wines. These are highly sought after (and expensive!) reds that tend to blend native Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or other varieties.
