Navazos Nieport 2011

For years now Equipo Navazos has made a strong bid for the potential of wines aged under veil of flor, at their natural abv levels (unfortified). This spurred the release of our original Navazos-Niepoort series--the fifth vintage of which will hit the market in 2013--as well as a number of experiments researching on palomino fino further aged in butts and tanks. The evolution of these wines, sourced from different vineyards in the Sherry region, has been carefully observed for the past five years. La Bota de Florpower no. 44 MMX is the most refined result from that research effort.

Cellaring/Ageing Potential Sourced from a historic albariza vineyard, fermented in butt with indigenous yeasts that impregnate the vines and the fermentation vessels themselves, aged for more than six months under a layer of flor thanks to the action of more indigenous yeasts that take control immediately after fermentation, and of course with not a single drop of added alcohol.
Awards and/or Press Quotes
Neil Martin (Wine Advocate) 91points It is an unfortified Palomino Fino fermented in cask from a single vineyard. It offers a fascinating bouquet with subtle oxidative notes combining beautifully with light resinous aromas. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp, walnut tinged entry, crisp acidity and a lovely, slightly abrupt yeasty finish. This is very fine.'
Jancis 16.5/20 Single-vineyard Palomino Fino from Macharnudo Alto. Fermented in 600-Litre casks but filled to only 450litres. Never gets above 28ºC This is a return to a traditional style of unfortified wines. But there is always the risk of VA or brett. Tangy, baked apple. Very dry and complex. Some nutty flavours but quite flat on the palate. Salty flor note. Opens up to a touch of blossom. Distinctively different and if other vintages are anything to go by, ages surprisingly well in bottle.'
