Douro Valley
The douro valley is a vast section of northern Portugal which extends between the city of Porto and the eastern border of the country, where the unique landscape of the Douro river and its tributaries. Wines of this region have a very distinct colour and aroma. The vines are sheltered from the wind by the humid mountains of Marao and Montemuro. Port wine is fortified with brandy and is what the area is traditionally famous for. In recent years though, the wines of Douro have also gained great popularity worldwide. The region experiences a continental climate, with very hot,dry summers and harsh cold winter conditions. The Schist based soil also means that roots need to dig deep into the earth. A small part of the production originates in granite soils.
