Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker originated in the town of Kilmarnock when a grocer starting bottling his own whisky for sale in the local area. When it became legal for merchants to blend their own whisky in 1860 a new label was born and after some tweaks over the years Johnnie Walker has evolved into what we have today. Johnnie Walker Red Label is currently the best selling whisky in the world, and it is found just about everywhere.

FAQs
Johnnie Walker Black Label typically retails from €35 to €45 for a standard 70cl bottle. As a 12 year minimum age Scotch blend combining malt and grain whiskies, it represents solid value in the premium blended Scotch category. The Johnnie Walker Double Black, Blue Label, and aged expressions command progressively higher prices. Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the prestige expression, typically retails from €180 to €220 depending on the retailer and any duty free market availability.
Johnnie Walker Red Label is a no age statement blended Scotch whisky. It does not carry a specific age declaration. The component whiskies in the blend vary in age, but no minimum maturation period beyond the legal three year requirement for Scotch whisky is specified or guaranteed. Red Label is the entry level expression in the Johnnie Walker range and is positioned as a mixable, accessible blended Scotch rather than a sipping whisky intended to showcase aged character.
Johnnie Walker Black Label at 40% ABV performs well neat or with a single large ice cube in a rocks glass, where the dried fruit, malt, light smoke, and vanilla oak character can be appreciated without over dilution. It is an excellent long serve whisky with cold soda water, which lifts the aromatic profile and makes it a viable all evening drink. In cocktails, it forms the base for a well balanced Rob Roy or Bobby Burns. Adding cola to a 12 year old blend is an acceptable personal preference rather than a technical failing.
Yes, particularly at Black Label and above. Johnnie Walker Black Label, at minimum 12 years of age across its component whiskies, is one of the most consistent and well crafted blended Scotch expressions at its price point globally. The higher expressions, including Gold Label Reserve, Aged 18 Years, and Blue Label, demonstrate Master Blender Richard Paterson's ability to achieve genuine complexity and elegance at each tier. The Red Label is functional rather than distinguished.
Johnnie Walker is a blended Scotch whisky brand rather than a single distillery product, so there is no singular Johnnie Walker distillery. The component malt whiskies are sourced from multiple Diageo owned Scottish distilleries including Cardhu, Talisker, Caol Ila, Clynelish, and others. The blending and bottling facility is located in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, the hometown of founder John Walker. The Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor experience in Edinburgh opened in 2021 as the brand's flagship visitor attraction.
