Malbec

Malbec was once widely planted in Bordeaux but a harsh frost in 1956 killed off 75% of the crop and it has been slowly phased out. It remains more common in the appelation of Cahors and also in pockets of the Loire valley. However Argentina seems to have had the most success with Malbec and some great wines are being made which range in style from soft and light to dark, smoky and tannic. In parts of France it is occasionally known as Auxerrois and Cot.
