Speyside

The region of Speyside holds around eighty working distilleries, the vast majority of the operational ones in Scotland. Historically Speyside was a hotbed for illicit stills, thanks mainly to the many secluded valleys and abundant water. These distilleries eventually became legal, larger distilleries many of which are now household names. In terms of style the malts can go from light, grassy and soft to big, sherried and chocolaty. Most, however, are only very lightly peated with only a handful tasting as smoky as the malts from Islay.
