Highlands
The Highlands region cover a vast area of Scotland and encompasses a large range of styles of whisky. The Speyside region also lies within the Highland region and there are definitely some similarities between the two when it comes to whiskey styles. However many Highland malts can be quite smoky, especially those from the western highland but also some from the eastern area. Further south and north they tend to be softer with many northern malts having what is described as a 'coastal character'.
